Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS): Unlocking Potential Through Early Care

Why Early Stimulation Matters

Research shows that early neurological stimulation can significantly impact a puppy's ability to handle stress, adapt, and thrive throughout life. While genetics play a role, up to 65% of a dog’s development depends on environmental factors like training, nutrition, and early experiences.

What Is ENS?

Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS), also known as the “Super Dog Program,” was developed by the U.S. Military to improve the performance of service dogs. It involves gentle, controlled exercises performed on puppies between 3 and 16 days of age—a critical period of neurological development.

ENS Exercises

Each ENS session includes five exercises, each lasting 3-5 seconds:

  1. Tactile Stimulation: Gently tickle the puppy between its toes with a cotton swab.

  2. Head Held Erect: Hold the puppy upright so its head is above its tail.

  3. Head Pointed Down: Gently hold the puppy with its head pointing downward.

  4. Supine Position: Place the puppy on its back in your hands, belly up.

  5. Thermal Stimulation: Place the puppy on a cool, damp towel.

Benefits of ENS

Research has shown that puppies exposed to ENS exercises demonstrate:

  • Improved Cardiovascular Health: Stronger heartbeats and better circulation.

  • Stronger Adrenal Glands: Enhanced stress tolerance.

  • Greater Disease Resistance: Improved immune system response.

  • Enhanced Learning Ability: Better problem-solving skills and adaptability.

  • Calmer Temperament: Increased resilience in stressful environments.

Why It Matters

While ENS exercises stimulate neurological development, they are not a replacement for daily handling, socialization, or play. Properly combining ENS with regular care helps puppies grow into confident, well-adjusted adult dogs.

A Balanced Approach

ENS should be done carefully—overstimulation can cause stress, while too little stimulation limits potential development. By integrating these proven methods, breeders can help puppies unlock their full potential, setting them up for healthier, happier lives.
